WATCH: New Year’s Eve with cold, rain and wind in Houston, snow possible in parts of Texas
When will the next storm arrive in Houston?
Our final 2020 storm system arrives on Wednesday with storms and a strong cold front on Wednesday night.
When will it rain and how much will we receive?
Showers and thunderstorms are possible anytime on Wednesday, but they seem more likely at night and during the night. As this climate system appears to be slowing down, a cold rain can last until sunrise on Thursday. Current expectations are that most will get 1-2 “of rain with isolated spots remaining 3-5”. It is possible to flood the streets on Wednesday night.
Will we have any bad weather?
Bad weather is possible, but still unlikely. Wind gusts would be our biggest threat if some severe weather materializes.
What is the weather forecast for the New Year in Houston?
New Year’s Eve will bring us cold, wind and rain, but we hope the rain will pass before midnight. The temperature will likely be stuck at 40 degrees all day. By midnight on New Year’s Day, temperatures are likely to be between 30 and 40 degrees, with a thermal sensation factor close to zero.
Wait, you said “freezing”. Will there be snow ?!
Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but there is a chance that snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At this point, it looks more likely along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact path the storm system travels in the state, so we can’t completely rule it out for Southeast Texas just yet.
So are you saying there is a chance of snow in Houston?
Yes, there is a very, very low non-zero chance, but don’t get your hopes up yet.
