Jets fans, you might want to sit down for this …
John McClain, who has covered Texans for nearly five decades, said on Wednesday that if Houston negotiates Deshaun Watson in the off-season, it will be for just one team.
“If they negotiated it, it would be [to] the Jets, “McClain said in an interview with SportsRadio 610 in Houston.
McClain went on to explain that Houston is not contacting other teams about a possible exchange for its star quarterback. In addition, the organization is not making Watson available in these conversations when other franchises ask questions in recent weeks.
“It doesn’t mean that they won’t do it eventually, but I guarantee that if they do, [it] it wouldn’t be for Carson Wentz and the Eagles, ”said McClain.
The veteran reporter recently revealed that he expects the asking price from Houston for Watson to be two first-round choices, two additional draft selections and a pair of “young defenders, at least.”
If that connected reporter is right, it means that Watson will not be moved unless New York destroys them with a package that they cannot refuse. After all, the Jets are arguably in the best position to make this exchange happen with the organization’s draft capital surplus.
Perhaps the package New York hypothetically sends to Houston would have picks that the Jets would eventually acquire in exchange for Sam Darnold. New York has allegedly answered calls about his current quarterback and I would certainly try to move it elsewhere if they could get their hands on a player like Watson.
Ultimately, it all comes back to Watson, as the 25-year-old can choose his fate thanks to his no-trade clause. The star is supposedly interested in playing for the Jets, however, that should end up being the least of New York’s worries if they try to close the deal.
