Houston Texans’ Brandin Cooks restructures deal to ease team wage ceiling, source says

HOUSTON – Texans have restructured Brandin Cooks’ wide receiver contract, sources confirmed to ESPN.

According to one source, the restructuring nullifies the last season of the deal that Cooks signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2018, meaning that he will now be a free agent after the 2022 season.

The NFL Network reported for the first time that Cooks’ contract was restructured. The restructuring, which frees more than $ 6 million in space for Texans, converts $ 10 million of Cooks’ base salary into a subscription bonus. Before the restructuring, Cooks reached the limit of $ 12 million in 2021, but he had no money guaranteed in his contract.

The restructuring guarantees Cooks’ salary in 2021 and adds $ 1 million to the contract over the next two seasons.

Cooks is leaving its fifth season with more than 1,000 receiving yards. The receiver, who has been playing on his fourth team in seven seasons, has had 81 receptions for 1,150 yards and six touchdowns in his first season in Houston.

Along with Cooks, the Texans hired Isaiah Coulter in the fifth round of 2020 and receivers Randall Cobb and Keke Coutee.

Wide receiver Will Fuller was playing on his fifth year option before being suspended in November. Houston has not used the franchise brand on Fuller, so he will be an unrestricted free agent when the new year of the league begins next week.
