House Republicans shed few tears for Matt Gaetz amid a fueled investigation

House Republicans are not rushing to defend Florida’s battled out Congressman Matt Gaetz.

The three-term legislator, facing a federal sex trafficking investigation, “will not last long,” a member of the Republican Party Congress told The Hill, claiming that Gaetz’s days on Capitol Hill are numbered.

A source at Casa GOP told the Post that the charges against Gaetz are “negligible”.

“At the moment, it seems that, at best, he leaves Congress in disgrace and, at worst, ends up in prison,” said the source. “He’s trying to tweet the whole situation, but it doesn’t seem to be going very well for him. … We would like this problem to go away. “

Although none of Gaetz’s Republican colleagues actively called on him to resign, evidence of discontent is growing.

House leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters this week that the charges against the congressman were “serious”. California Republican Party representative David Valadao gave Gaetz campaign donations to victims of domestic violence, Axios reported.

Former Republican Party representative Barbara Comstock, called for him to go.

Gaetz, one of former President Trump’s closest allies in Congress, has long been a divisive figure in his party and particularly irritates many of his colleagues for his attacks on other lawmakers.

In January, Gaetz held a rally in Wyoming to protest against US Representative Liz Cheney, one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the January 6 uprising of the United States Capitol. He played an active role in an unsuccessful internal effort by the Chamber to remove it from its leadership role as chairman of the GOP Chamber conference.

Gaetz, who says he will not resign, has denied allegations of paying for sex with minors and says he is the victim of a baroque extortion plan.
