“The official qualification period for the candidate is not until the beginning of 2022. McCormack’s candidacy is the only one we know of that has been publicly launched, but other candidates have filed with the FEC,” Chambers told CNN.
McCormack says he is running to set a better example.
“I looked at my children, I looked at last year and everything that happened in our nation and what is happening here in Georgia, and I said that we cannot wait. This is not the example that I want to set for my children, and I don’t want them to see this from people in a position of influence, “McCormack told CNN on Friday.
In response to McCormack’s candidacy, Greene’s spokesman, Nick Dyer, told CNN that the 14th District “issued a mandate on November 3, 2020, overwhelmingly voting for President Trump and Congressman Greene.”
Georgia’s Democrats are well aware of the difficult battle.
“Any victory for Holly would be a pain if she succeeded, and it would probably be by the smallest of margins, but not impossible,” Terrence Clark, the former campaign communications director for Senator Raphael Warnock and a political agent in the state, told CNN .
If Democrats achieve very high voter turnout and the legislature considers making Greene district more competitive by redrawing state lines, McCormack may have a chance, Clark said, but he doubts that even high democratic participation can affect the district due to your story. Still, he notes the importance of placing candidates, even in difficult districts.
Clark also emphasized that Greene became a Trump-like figure, which could energize Republicans, but also bring Democrats to the polls.
But, he said, “I don’t think that happens where Holly can turn the district around just that.”
Abigail Collazo, a Georgia-based Democratic strategist, said McCormack will not be the only Democrat to face Greene in 2022, although she also recognizes the challenges.
“This district will be difficult. Having said that, several circumstances could change in the next year and a half, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned in recent years, it’s that you have qualified candidates everywhere,” added Collazo.
McCormack sought to minimize his identity as a Democrat running in a heavily Republican district and promised to run a campaign that would have wide appeal.
“I know we can win. I know that,” she said. “I believe that the people in the district are good, hardworking and just want to have a chance in the American dream. I will not portray myself this way or the other. We are all Americans. And I am an American first.”
