Ryan supported Clinton at the 2016 presidential primaries over Bernie Sanders and also sided with her in 2008. He also gained support to compete with progressive Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California).
Other Democrats that could be in the mix for the seat include Nan Whaley, the mayor of Dayton, and David Pepper, who was once president of the state’s Democratic party.
Democrats are looking to overturn Portman’s chair in 2022, along with Sens retirement chairs. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) And Richard Burr (RN.C.). The 50-50 division of the Senate is currently in the hands of Democrats due to Vice President Kamala Harris’ tiebreaker vote.
Portman said he made his announcement early to allow Republicans to prepare for the campaign in what could be a difficult primary GOP. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan said he is not running for the seat, but former Ohio treasurer Josh Mandel, author JD Vance and Rep. Steve Stivers are all among potential candidates in a crowded republican field.
Former President Donald Trump won in Ohio in 2016 and 2020.
To win in Ohio, Democrats need to talk about “bread and butter” economic issues, Ryan said on MSNBC Saturday morning.
“Trump beat Ohio by eight points. So, if we’re going to win a seat like Ohio, we have to figure out how to move a little bit to the middle and get some of those voters, or we won’t be able to win a seat in the Senate, ”said Ryan.
Ryan tweeted he was “seriously” thinking about a race for the spot shortly after Portman announced his decision not to race on Monday.
