(TNS) – Some parts of York County, SC, who didn’t have high speed internet are about to go live.
Fiber-based Internet at speeds of up to 1 Gbps will extend to Izmir, Hickory Grove and western York county. Complete upgrades can take two or three years, but some York county residents may have a new service in mid-2021.
The change comes through a partnership with Comporium and York Electric Cooperative. It impacts about 5,000 York Electric members in York and parts of Cherokee counties. Some details are yet to be determined, through a joint release of the Comporium and York Electric, after a year of discussion about the project.
From others Comporium services such as video streaming, voice, security and home automation will be available along with enhanced internet access.

High-speed Internet has become increasingly useful in recent years, as everything from shopping and banking to entertainment and communication has been brought online. The COVID-19 pandemic that started last spring has also made schools virtual, with supermarket deliveries and more doing the same, while many people stayed at home.

, in the statement, said that his group always wants to take care of its members.
“We are excited about partnering with Comporium bringing broadband to many who have suffered from insufficient access for several years, fulfilling our promise to improve the quality of life for those who live in our communities, “said Basha.” After recognizing the growing need for high-speed Internet, especially during the pandemic, YEC’s board and management team responded with a plan to help. “
York Electric is a nonprofit electricity company based in York with more than 63,000 customers in York, Lancaster, Chester and Cherokee counties. It is one of 20 electricity cooperatives in South Carolina. Comporium, based on Rock hill, has more than 134,000 customers in a service area of more than 4,000 square miles.
