Hicks: Mace defiantly makes his own way, challenges trolls, in his first week | Columnists

Nancy Mace apparently disturbed some of the lunatics at the social media asylum.

“You stabbed us in the back.”

“Enjoy your mandate.”

“You are history.”

Since the new Congresswoman from the 1st District announced that she would not object to the Electoral College’s certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, Mace has been approached on the streets and online. One person even threatened to shoot her. Which is as elegant as it is effective.

Because Mace, the first woman to graduate from the Citadel, is not intimidated by a little prank.

“I don’t care if I get re-elected now,” said Mace last week on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press Daily”. “It is worth saving my children and my country. We need to respect the Constitution and the rule of law. We cannot lie to the American people, and that is what has been happening in recent weeks. “

Crazy props to Mace for speaking the truth while most of his colleagues overshadowed.

President Donald Trump insisted for two months that he won the election “with an overwhelming victory” and, unfortunately, many people believe all the contradictory things he says … no matter the press, Republican Party officials, federal judges – or your own eyes and ears – say.

Last week, to the surprise of anyone who was paying attention, all that rhetoric turned to violence and five people died … one of them inside the United States Capitol. As Mace said, Washington looked like a third world country, and she blamed deceptive rhetoric and small talk.

“Millions of Americans have been cheated,” said Mace. “They were told that the vice president could overturn the results of the Electoral College.”

Yes, that was a lie. Or, at least, an impressive display of ignorance.

Look, Mace is not a left flower child. In fact, she has supported Trump for years and clung to him more than many thought she should during a campaign in the politically diverse 1st District. It probably helped her beat congressman Joe Cunningham.

But since then, Mace has apparently picked up the best move from Cunningham’s book. In other words, she has been moderate, frank and full of common sense. Which is generally a very good policy in Lowcountry.

“This was not a protest, they were disorderly, this was an angry crowd,” said Mace. “Everyone knew upon entering the chamber that it was a futile attempt. … There is no way for you to judge, investigate, or actually present evidence of electoral fraud on the floor of the US House during a ceremonial vote to certify the Electoral College. “

That kind of direct conversation ended up on CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and National Public Radio in just its first week as a member of Congress. Not many freshman lawmakers attract so much national attention, but Mace stood out because he was unmasking demagogy while many of his colleagues were still on the crazy train.

Unfortunately, some people do not want to hear. When a man claiming to be a constituent stopped her on a DC street Tuesday night, Mace explained the futility (not to mention the illegality) of trying to overturn the will of 81 million voters. He didn’t want to hear. There is no way to argue with the ignorant.

As seen on Twitter, some have already ruled out Mace. Particularly because she said “all of Trump’s legacy was wiped out” when he incited a crowd to invade our seat of government.

Perhaps Mace is just more experienced, or at least ahead of the curve, as more and more Republicans have followed suit and started to abandon the SS Trump. And Mace did not completely abandon the boat; it hits the talking points of electoral fraud. Even so, the deputy gets a high score for not agreeing with that coup farce.

If such openness costs Mace some supporters, she is earning exponentially more. Because in one week she showed more courage – and integrity – than Joe Wilson, Ralph Norman and other Republican members of the South Carolina House have shown in all their careers.

They all participated in an absurd and reprehensible piece of political theater while Mace actually followed the oath he took to defend the Constitution.

As Cunningham found out, Mace will never make everyone – especially internet trolls – happy. But if the rest of your first term is like your first week, Twitterati will be wrong about one thing. Nancy Mace will have a seat in Congress for as long as she wants.
