Here’s what you should know, December 25, 2020

DETROIT – The number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Michigan rose to 469,928 on Wednesday, including 11,775 deaths, state officials reported.

Wednesday’s update includes 3,443 new cases and 70 additional deaths. On Tuesday, the state reported a total of 466,485 confirmed cases and 11,705 deaths.

• The state will not provide updated COVID-19 numbers on Christmas Day, according to its website. The last update was on December 23 and the next update is expected on Saturday, December 26.

Michigan’s 7-day average for new COVID cases dropped to 3,311 on Wednesday. The state had a total of about 173,400 active cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday.

Hospitalizations began to decline in December. As of Wednesday, there were 3,086 COVID patients in Michigan hospitals, of which 738 were in intensive care.

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 18 million COVID cases have been reported across the country as of Wednesday afternoon. More than 329,000 died in the United States from the virus.

Worldwide, more than 78 million people were confirmed to be infected and more than 1.7 million died on Wednesday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University. The real numbers are certainly much higher, due to limited testing, the different ways in which nations count the dead and the deliberate underreporting of some governments.

Michigan restaurants are still struggling to resume internal meals, which is prohibited under the state’s COVID-19 order, but Governor Gretchen Whitmer suggested that some good news might arrive soon.

“My hope is that if people do what they did on Thanksgiving and don’t travel, and do the right thing and keep our meetings in a family or two at most, and wear masks, we will be in a strong position soon after the first of the year to take another step forward, ”said Whitmer.

The United States added a second COVID-19 vaccine to its arsenal on Friday, December 19, stepping up efforts to contain an outbreak so dire that the country is regularly reporting more than 3,000 deaths a day.

The much-needed doses are expected to arrive on Monday after the Food and Drug Administration authorized an emergency launch of the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the state is revising its COVID-19 to resume face-to-face high school classes, reopen certain indoor entertainment venues and allow outdoor sports and contactless fitness classes.

The state is currently under a “pause” that imposed stricter COVID-19 regulations in restaurants, schools and more, but that order was scheduled to expire on Sunday (December 20).

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has now issued a revised version of the order, which will take effect until January 15.

A new tool created by Michigan Health Officers can calculate the likelihood of a person getting COVID-19 and the severity of the infection, based on their life situation and personal behavior.

O Michigan Department of Health and Human Services launched “CV19 CheckUp” – a free anonymous tool that assesses someone’s risks associated with COVID-19.

“This tool, which we will make available to all Michiganders, helps individuals understand their risks based on their life situation and personal behavior and offers recommendations to reduce those risks, while connecting people to services, if necessary”, said Dr. Alexis Travis, senior deputy director of the Aging & Adult Services Agency.

Travis said the tool could be used by all Michigan residents, but was specifically designed to help adults 60 and older. It is anonymous and does not require a name, email address or identifier of any kind.

The tool used artificial intelligence to analyze each person through an online questionnaire. It is designed for those who are considered to be at high risk.

The tool’s algorithms are driven by science and medicine, using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
