Greenville and Spartanburg again lead South Carolina in COVID cases

The state Department of Health and Environmental Control announced 1,410 new confirmed cases and 82 new probable cases of the new coronavirus on Thursday, as well as 17 additional confirmed deaths and 2 new probable deaths.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 189,251, probable cases to 11,909, confirmed deaths to 3,924 and probable deaths to 277.

There were 9,729 individual test results reported across the state on Wednesday, and 14.5% were positive.

Today’s COVID-19 report from the State Department of Health and Environmental Control shows Greenville, which has 10.2% of the state’s population according to 2019 Census estimates, is responsible for 15.75% of new cases of coronaviruses registered on Thursday.

Spartanburg, which has 6.2% of the state’s population, accounts for 10.05% of Thursday’s cases.

Anderson, who has 3.9% of the state’s population, accounts for 5.09% of Thursday’s cases.

Pickens, who has 2.5% of the state’s population, accounts for 4.22% of new cases of the new coronavirus.

GCS can become virtual if COVID cases increase after holidays

The Greenville County school district is asking students and parents to take precautions while on vacation to prevent an increase in coronavirus cases.

The message to parents comes with a severe warning – if positive cases increase significantly in the district, schools will be closed and students will have to go to e-Learning.

Blood and Plasma Drive arriving at Fluor Field on Friday

Blood Connection, along with three Greenville sports teams, will donate blood on Friday at the Fluor Field center.

Greenville Drive, Grenville Triumph and Greenville Swamp Rabbits will host the “Unite the Fight” convalescent plasma and whole blood campaign with Blood Connection from 11 am to 4 pm, according to a statement.

Those interested in donating must register on the website www.positivetopositive.com. Walk-ins are also welcome, said a statement.

Here’s what to know Thursday

  • South Carolina’s DHEC announced 1,226 new confirmed cases and 22 additional confirmed deaths on Wednesday.
  • This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 187,774, the probable cases to 11,673, the confirmed deaths to 3,906 and the probable deaths to 276.
  • Greenville County, the most populous in the state, led South Carolina with 214 cases.
  • There were 7,233 individual test results reported across the state, not including antibody tests, and the positive percentage was 17%.
  • South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson is quarantined at home after being close to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, the Attorney General’s Office said in an email Tuesday afternoon.
  • High school students in the Greenville County school district will begin a gradual return to integral learning in person next week, Superintendent Burke Royster announced Monday morning. Details here.
  • The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control issued a statement on Monday urging South Carolinians to be “vigilant” during this holiday season.
