Here comes the cold – and a weekend storm to monitor

DETROIT – Tuesday’s snow fell almost exactly as we showed you at Local 4 News Today, and that system is over.

Cold air in your wake will be with us for the next few days – you will notice the cold, although it is far from what you would fondly call “Polar Vortex cold”. It’s just the normal cold of winter, and we can handle it.

We had a quick cleaning late at night in some parts of the area, which will allow for a little morning sun in those places. However, we must be cloudy again in the afternoon. Highs of 20 to 20 degrees (-3 to -2 degrees Celsius), with a north wind of 5 to 10 mph, adding a little chill to the air.

It looks like the Lake Huron effect snow bands will be just east of the Thumb (you folks from Ontario, downwind of the lake, of course, are getting it). However, some high-resolution computer models suggest that a band may deviate a little to the west and approach our coast. If you live well along Lake Huron, keep an eye on our app’s radar today to monitor these bands.

Today’s sunrise is at 7:51 AM and today’s sunset is at 17:42 PM

Partly cloudy and noticeably colder on Wednesday night, with minimum temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees (-11 degrees Celsius). Northwest wind from 5 to 10 mph.

Partly cloudy Thursday morning, then changing to mostly cloudy in the afternoon. Highs in the mid-1920s (-5 to -4 degrees Celsius).

The sky is partly cloudy on Thursday night, with lows again at around eighteen degrees (-11 degrees Celsius).

Usually sunny on Friday – it is always good to end the work week with a little sun! Highs in the mid-20s (-4 degrees Celsius).

Mostly clear on Friday night, with minimum returns for teenagers (-11 degrees Celsius).

The executions of this morning’s new computer model show some interesting trends. There are no changes to Saturday’s forecast – we will have a dry day that starts with a little sun and probably ends with more clouds than sun. Highs around 20 degrees (-2 degrees Celsius) – what a great day for children to go sledding!

Cloudy on Saturday night, with lows around 20s (-5 degrees Celsius).

Sunday is an interesting day. Of the four long-range models, two (ECMWF and UKMET) move the storm directly to the east and far enough to the south, so that we would completely lose precipitation. Meanwhile, the other two models (the GFS and the GEM) are further north and bring snow to the area.

Given the model’s performance with Tuesday’s storm, I am strongly leaning towards ECMWF and UKMET, and keeping most of us dry on Sunday. Obviously, those of you in the south will be closer to the system, so even the smallest drift to the north would bring some snow to your area. Sunday highs in the 30s (-1 to 0 degrees Celsius).

I will continue to monitor things throughout the week and keep them updated here in my daily weather article and on Twitter (@ PGLocal4)
