In collective messages obtained by The New York Times, Heidi Cruz said his home was “FREEZING” and invited an unspecified number of people to join his family on a trip to the Mexican vacation spot until Sunday.

The messages, which were verified by a second person not identified in the topic, invited friends to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún and noted the price of the room this week at $ 309 a night. She added that her family stayed there “many times”.

Cruz’s trip on Thursday, which he later shortened, was heavily criticized on social media due to the timing, which occurred because many in his home state were struggling without energy, heat and drinking water in freezing temperatures.

Cruz’s office did not respond to a request for comment from the Times on text messages.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, while returning to the United States, Cruz addressed the reason for the trip, stating that his daughters wanted to “take a trip with some friends”.

“Yesterday my daughters asked if they could go on a trip with some friends and Heidi and I agreed, so I flew with them last night, left them here and now I’m going back to Texas,” he told reporters.

“It was obviously a mistake and, on second thought, I wouldn’t have made it,” he added at a press conference outside his home.

Her decision to leave the state for Cancún was severely criticized by Democratic Party state president Gilberto Hinojosa, who called her “insensitivity as any politician can be” in a statement to the Times.

“He is a politician who has never really cared much about anyone but himself,” Hinojosa told the Times.
