I have a confession to make. I grabbed the opportunity to pay the full $ 14.99 HBO Max subscription price as soon as I found out that my favorite show on TV right now – the melancholy and magnificent series of the Italian mafia Gomorrah – is available on the streamer. Which includes seasons of the show that have already aired, as well as the long-awaited third season of Gomorrah which was added to HBO Max in January.
This series reveals that almost all the stories of the American Mafia are a case of clown, patty-cake, totally devoid of an ounce of authenticity or soul. I read somewhere that Naples practically closed whenever a new episode of Gomorrah airs there, and I believe. “Gomorrah Is Back, as Bloody (and Gripping) as Ever”, announced The New York Times in January. We already knew that a cheaper, ad-supported HBO Max subscription level was coming, and now the streamer’s parent company has made it official.
AT&T, owner of the WarnerMedia entertainment division that includes HBO Max along with the Warner Bros. film studio, confirmed today in an Investor Day update posted on its website that an advertising version of HBO Max will be released in June. The launch is also scheduled with a much larger expansion of HBO Max: “AT&T expects to launch HBO Max in 60 markets outside the United States in 2021 (39 territories in Latin America and the Caribbean at the end of June and 21 territories in Europe in the second half of 2021) ”, explains the update of the company’s strategy.
As noted, a subscription to HBO Max currently costs $ 14.99 / month in the United States, and we still don’t know where the price of this new level of HBO Max will fall. However, the price cut can be substantial – or, rather, there is precedence for it to be. A Hulu subscription without ads costs $ 11.99 / month, for example, compared to just $ 5.99 for an ad-supported version. In addition, an important caveat: remember the big announcement that the entire Warner Bros. ‘new movies will hit HBO Max the same day they hit theaters this year – movies like The Matrix 4? Don’t get me wrong, I tried and enjoyed some other offers of content from HBO Max. But as my affection for Gomorrah shows, you probably also won’t find at least one addictive thing on the service – so much so that you may even decide that this thing, whatever it may be, is worth the price of admission alone. Some of you love to try the streaming buffet, and there are also those of us who just want to overeat their favorites. All kinds are needed to make the streaming world go round.
