Hawaiian Gardens Hospital wants to hire 100 people amid the reopening as a COVID treatment center

HAWAIIAN GARDENS, Calif. (KABC) – A previously closed hospital in Hawaiian Gardens held a hiring event on Saturday morning after a recent reopening as a COVID-19 treatment center.

Pacific Gardens Medical Center, with 137 beds, is looking to hire 100 qualified and unqualified nurses and other staff, including food services and caretakers.

Newly hired employees will help with the emergency room staff, intensive care unit and coronavirus treatment unit.

The hospital also needs to fill vacancies in its departments of pharmacy, surgery and radiology, officials said.

Pasadena’s Marilyn Evans expects her to be among those who will be hired. Recently, she has been working with COVID-19 patients.

“They are there alone, we are constantly or talking to families or on the phone with families, it becomes a little difficult, but that is what we are for, to give them a kind of hope and tell them, keep pushing on “, she said.

The medical center, which closed in 2017 after financial difficulties, reopened earlier this week as part of an effort to combat the pandemic COVID-19 in the surrounding community. The new owners of the hospital spent more than $ 20 million on the renovation.

“It is a gigantic undertaking,” said David Diamond, a spokesman for the facility. “It requires all of our support team. In this building are the heroes. They are people who have given up much of their personal lives for something they believe to be extremely important to the community.”

The facility expects to be fully filled by mid-April. Evans knows that this opportunity for her can also help a struggling community.

“There is a demand and I am attending to you every day. I pray to stay healthy so I can go to work, ”said Evans.

Saturday’s job fair ended, but more applications were due on Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm at Pacific Gardens Medical Center, 21530 South Pioneer Boulevard in Hawaiian Gardens.
