Hawaii reports 96 new cases of coronavirus as statewide count rises to 30,135

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 96 new coronavirus infections in Hawaii, bringing the state’s total since the pandemic began to 30,135 cases.

State health officials have reported no new coronavirus-related deaths, as the number of deaths across the state remains at 467.

The official number of coronavirus-related deaths in the state includes 369 deaths on Oahu, 53 on the island of Hawaii, 41 on Maui, one on Kauai and three Hawaii residents who died outside the state.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the United States today is about 555,000 and the infection count across the country is over 30.7 million.

New cases of infection across the state today include 51 on Oahu, 26 on Maui and 15 on the island of Hawaii, and four Hawaii residents diagnosed outside the state, according to health officials.

The statistics released today reflect the new cases of infection reported to the department on Friday.

The total number of coronavirus cases per island since the outbreak started is 23,336 in Oahu, 2,968 in Maui, 2,525 in Hawaii County, 196 in Kauai, 111 in Lanai and 34 in Molokai. There are also 965 residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed outside the state.

Health officials also said today that of the state’s total infection count, 1,301 cases were considered active. Officials say they regard infections reported in the past 14 days as a “proxy number for active cases”. The number of active cases in the state has increased by 19 today.

By island, Oahu has 778 active cases, Maui has 358, Ilha Grande has 150, Kauai has 10, Molokai has three and Lanai has two.

Health officials counted 6,087 new results from the COVID-19 test in today’s count, for a positivity rate of 1.5% across the state. The state’s average 7-day positivity rate is 1.8%, according to Hawaii’s COVID-19 data panel.

The state of Hawaii’s COVID-19 vaccine summary said 634,442 vaccines were administered out of the 717,980 received by the state on Wednesday. About 28% of Hawaii’s general population received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 2,011 required hospitalizations, with two new hospitalizations in Maui reported today by state health officials.

Eight hospitalizations in the state count are Hawaii residents who have been diagnosed and treated outside the state. Of the 1,293 hospitalizations in the state, 1,698 occurred in Oahu, 183 in Maui, 108 in Ilha Grande, eight in Kauai, five in Lanai and one in Molokai.

According to the latest information from the Hawaii department’s COVID-19 data panel, a total of 42 patients with the virus were in Hawaii hospitals on Thursday morning, nine in intensive care units and five on ventilators.

Oahu switched to the less restrictive Tier 3 of the city’s four-tier economic recovery plan on February 25, after being in Tier 2 since October 22. Tier 3 allows for social and outdoor recreational meetings of up to 10 people, and restaurants to seat 10 people at a table, of five now. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi on March 11 announced changes to Level 3, including allowing bars to reopen under the same conditions as restaurants and extending the curfew until midnight.

The average seven-day Oahu case count is 59 and the seven-day average positivity rate is 2.1%, according to the mayor.
