Imagine being a freshman at a school in the mountains of North Georgia and seeing a helicopter landing on your campus. This helicopter contains none other than Kirby Smart and he wants to talk to your trainer about you as a quarterback from the University of Georgia almost 4 years later. It sounds like a made-up story, almost too good to be true, but that’s exactly what happened to Gunner Stockton on January 31, 2019.
That’s how much Stockton was a priority for Georgia and how early Kirby Smart and his team identified their talents.
And Stockton announced today through his social media feeds, that these talents are no longer going to South Carolina to play Gamecocks.
“After much discussion and prayer with my family, I decided to withdraw from the University of South Carolina. In August, I made the decision to commit to the University, the program and the team. A lot has changed since then, and I feel I must reassess my situation. I want to thank Connor Shaw for all his love, support and understanding. Please, no interviews at this time. “
Stockton high school coach Jaybo Shaw is the brother of former South Carolina defender Connor Shaw. The connections don’t stop there either. Mike Bobo’s father, George Bobo is actually the man who taught Gunner Stockton to throw the football. There was an extreme connection to the South Carolina program.
Bobo left the South Carolina program to become the offensive coordinator at Auburn, and the head coach that Stockton committed to, Will Muschamp was replaced by Shane Beamer. This was a foregone conclusion, considering the fall in South Carolina.
