GTA V on PS5 / XSX uses RDR2’s Refine RAGE engine, insider suggests

GTA V Enhanced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S can use Rockstar’s updated Red Dead Redemption 2 RAGE engine.

GTA V Enhanced, the next generation version of the 2013 GTA game, will arrive later this year and, according to Rockstar insider ‘Tez2’, the expanded and enhanced version of the game can run on the latest version of Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (ANGER).

As posted on the GTA Forums, Tez2 (who has been on the scene when it comes to Rockstar-related information in the past), found new GTA V game data that was recently added. These new ‘structures’ seem to mention the RDR2 Rage engine instead of the game’s reworked 2014 engine. The refined 2018 version of the RAGE engine supports physics-based rendering, fog values, pre-calculated global illumination, volumetric clouds and fog values.

The insider mentioned that this could only suggest that only the UI will make use of the new engine, while the rest of the PS5 / XSX version will run on the older engine.

“We discovered new structures that were added with the recent update related to the standalone version and one of them is” rage :: fwuiMessageBase “, which is from the RAGE version of RDR2, so it seems to go along with @ Spider-Vice & @uNi stated that the enhanced edition will likely use the RAGE version of RDR2, ”wrote Tez2. “However, it may be that the UI uses the RDR2 base code, while the rest remains the same.”

Another interesting detail is that the updated game files seem to suggest that players may be able to transfer their characters as soon as the enhanced versions of GTA V are released.

Interesting things for sure. Red Dead Redemption 2 remains one of the most beautiful games to date, and we can only hope that GTA V makes use of the same engine on next generation consoles.
