Environmental activist Greta Thunberg was featured on a new Swedish postage stamp in recognition of her work to “preserve Sweden’s unique nature for future generations”.
Thunberg, who turned 18 on January 3, is depicted standing on top of a rocky cliff wearing a yellow raincoat, with swallows flying around her, as part of a backdrop by artist and illustrator Henning Trollbäck entitled Valuable Nature .
The series, available from Thursday, presents some of the 16 environmental quality goals recently developed by the Swedish government, including habitats designated as important to protect, said the national postal service, PostNord.
Other stamps in the set, intended for domestic letters, feature high mountains and their flora, a forest, an agricultural landscape and a swamp of unique biodiversity. This year’s European stamps include a picture of the endangered green spotted frog.
“We are pleased that Greta, among several illustrations of an important nature, will be symbolized on our stamps,” said Kristina Olofsdotter of PostNord. “These natural places are very important and we all need to do our part to preserve them.”
Previous series of labels in Sweden portrayed Astrid Lindgren, the children’s author who created Pippi das Meias Altas, football player Zlatan Ibrahimović and the late DJ and producer Avicii.
In a recent interview to celebrate his birthday, Thunberg, whose individual school strike in 2018 turned into a global youth movement, told the Sunday Times that he had stopped flying and “consumed things”, but did not judge people whose choices were less environmentally friendly. correct than itself.
“I’m not telling anyone what to do,” she said. “There is a risk when you talk about these things and don’t practice while preaching, so you will be criticized and what you are saying will not be taken seriously.”
