Greta Thunberg faces investigation in India over agricultural protest tweets

Greta Thunberg accidentally shared a message showing that she was being told about what to write on Twitter about the violent farmers’ uprising in India – leading to her being investigated for criminal conspiracy by local police on Thursday, according to reports.

The 18-year-old left-wing eco-activist shared – and then quickly deleted – a message detailing a list of “suggested posts” about the ongoing protests, according to the posts that were saved by Breaking 911.

The list gave a series of tips on what to post, also asking her to post again and tag other celebrities who tweeted about it, including pop star Rihanna.

In addition to the Twitter storm, the “toolkit” she shared also suggested highlighting planned demonstrations at Indian embassies.

The campaign material and the social media model were created by Canada’s Poetic Justice Foundation, which claims to be a grassroots group that creates “events to provoke, challenge and break systemic inequalities and prejudices,” said Times Now. group confirms that it is “more actively involved in #FarmersProtest”.

The group then shared on Facebook a series of screenshots of the posts that appears to have led celebrities to share.

After deleting the list, Thunberg then shared a supposedly more recent “toolkit” and a message saying: “We support #FarmersProtest in India”.

India’s Foreign Ministry issued a rare statement accusing “foreign individuals” and celebrities of “sensationalism” and “trying to impose their agenda”.

Delhi police have also launched a formal investigation, accusing it of creating disharmony and being part of a larger conspiracy, according to Times Now.

The force submitted a First Information Report – a preliminary formal investigation – on charges of promoting enmity between different groups and criminal conspiracy, the report said.

A number of renowned Indian celebrities have also joined the attack on foreign celebrities who have been involved in the farmers’ uprising that has engulfed India for more than two months.

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut even called protesting farmers “terrorists” and Rihanna “silly” for her widely shared tweet that asked her 100 million Twitter followers: “Why aren’t we talking about this ?!”

Thunberg remained defiant on Thursday. “I still #StandWithFarmers and support your peaceful protest,” she tweeted Thursday morning.

“No amount of hatred, threats or human rights violations are going to change that.”
