GREMLINS ‘Billy and Gizmo Return in new MTN DEW ad

Each Gremlins fan knows the three rules for owning a Mogwai:

1. They hate bright lights, especially sunlight, because it can kill them.
2. Keep yours out of the water. Don’t drink and don’t bathe.
3. Never feed it after midnight.

If anyone must understand the importance of these decrees is Billy Peltzer. He first received Gizmo as a Christmas gift in 1984. You would think he would recover after more than 36 years. But a new commercial shows that he is as careless with his adorable pet as ever. Because it turns out that there is a fourth rule for having a Mogwai: don’t give him a big bottle of soda.

Mountain Dew reunited Gremlins star Zach Galligan with his best friend Mogwai in a new ad for the company’s sugar-free drink. It shows Billy foolishly trusting that Gizmo will be careful with a bottle of the green substance. It’s too liquid for the hairy guy to deal with, as Gizmo accidentally spills a little on himself. What follows is the same thing that happens every time a Mogwai gets wet. Gizmo begins to generate descendants, in an ad that reminds us how angry we are for never having one Gremlins 3.

But this commercial serves as an update to what happened to Billy de Galligan and Kate Beringer by Phoebe Cates. They were engaged in 1990 Gremlins 2. Now we know (assuming it is a canon, which is what we will assume, please and thank you) that they are still married and have at least one teenage daughter. And she has her own cute Mogwai. Aww. Look at these two. Don’t they look like they should be the main stars in the next film in the franchise?

MTN DEW

YEA. THEY DO.

Which brings us to rule five of owning a Mogwai: you can’t make us wait three decades for another sequence and then just give us a 30-second commercial. But we promise, if this announcement leads to Gremlins 3 let’s watch with a Mountain Dew.
