Sherman also reported that the Yankees are sending southpaw James Reeves, 27, who was the choice of the tenth round of the Draft in 2015, to San Diego in the deal. The Yankees did not confirm the news.
Allen, 27, was assigned for assignment by the Fathers last week in a move used to make room for newly hired camp player Ha-Seong Kim. Allen arrived in San Diego from Cleveland last summer in the trade that also brought right-handed Mike Clevinger to the west coast, but Allen appeared in just one game for the Fathers.
Allen’s reputation is more for stellar defense in the outer field than for the baton. The San Diego native was rated above average by the Statcast Outs Above Average metric in each of the past four seasons, while producing a 0.239 / .298 / 0.343 cut line with eight homers on the board.
