CLEVELAND, Ohio – Andrew Berry’s second pass through the free agency as Browns GM was not as busy as the first.
Last year, the Browns hired nine new players and switched to another one in the first week, while Berry tried to give his new team a makeover. This year, he hired three new players (John Johnson III, Takk McKinley, Troy Hill) and rehired three others (Malcolm Smith, Rashard Higgins, JoJo Natson). The Browns also brought back a former training team striker (Greg Senat).
The free agency is fluid and never really stops, but it is worth looking at the first wave and taking stock of how the Browns fared.
Below is a poll to assess additions to the Browns’ roster. First, though, here’s a recap of the players that Berry has acquired.
John Johnson III, S: The Browns added a versatile player to the back of Joe Woods’ secondary.
Takk McKinley, DE: The former first-round pick has a chance to restart his career alongside Myles Garrett.
Troy Hill, CB: With the ability to play in and out of the slot, Hill gives the defense options in the cornerback.
Malcolm Smith, LB: The former Super Bowl MVP was the Browns’ best coverage linebacker last season.
Rashard Higgins, WR: The Browns bring back one of the most efficient recipients in the league for Baker Mayfield.
JoJo Natson, WR / KR: Natson was the team’s main kicker until an ACL injury ended his 2020 season after three games.
Greg Senat, OL: Senat played 10 games, mostly on special teams, for the Cowboys last season.
Obviously, there are still questions with the list that will not be really answered until the games start. But until then, we can at least classify movements based on what we know today.
