It is no coincidence that Grace Kinstler, a Berklee student, ended three episodes of “American Idol”. It is literally a hindrance.

The powerful vocalist, who has been a favorite in the competition since her audition ended the season debut, dominated the stage in the All Star Duets and Solos round on Sunday. The episode was the first time that the artists sang in front of a studio audience (socially distanced) and the first time that their future on the show will be decided by the viewers, not by the judges.

Kinstler’s solo was “Queen” by Jessie J, a female empowerment hymn with a positive body. Chicagoan spoke in previous episodes about growing up with body insecurity.

The solo was followed by a duet with British singer-songwriter Joss Stone – “Midnight Train to Georgia” by Gladys Knight & The Pips.

“She is so talented that she can do anything with her voice,” said Stone.

Kinstler proved that she was right, effortlessly hitting the high notes and achieving an impressive vocal performance in the final bars. (Stone’s advice: leave the race to the end. You don’t show up for a lingerie date … that comes later.)

Brighton resident Beane and Boxford resident Colin Jamieson will do their solos and duets on Monday night. Four finalists each night will be sent home by public vote, winning the 24 to 16 competition next week, when live performances will begin.

Viewers can vote for their favorite singers up to 10 times on the “American Idol” website, on the “American Idol” app (iOS, Android) or by sending text messages to contestants’ numbers to 21523. Voting for each episode ends at 6am in the morning. following day.
