Governor Lamont announces accelerated schedule to deliver COVID-19 vaccines to Connecticut residents as quickly and equitably as possible

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont announced today that he is accelerating the launch of the age-based COVID-19 vaccine in Connecticut to proceed on a faster schedule than originally planned when it was announced last month. The revised schedule, which foresees the expansion of the vaccine for all adults over 16 until April 5, occurs at the time the state has been informed by the Biden administration that it should anticipate receiving a significant increase in the supply of all the three vaccines authorized by the federal government in the coming weeks.

Connecticut continues to rank among the top five states in the country in terms of the percentage of the population that has been vaccinated.

“We have some of the best and most dedicated providers in Connecticut who have been working around the clock to create the infrastructure that will provide vaccines to as many residents as we can as quickly as possible.” Governor Lamont said. “Based on our discussions with the federal government about the allocation of vaccines, we expect to receive more than 200,000 first doses per week in early April. This distribution, combined with our state’s strong execution over the past few weeks, allows Connecticut to significantly accelerate the schedule so that we can vaccinate as equitably and efficiently as many residents as possible. It will take some time to get the vaccine to everyone who wants it and I ask for as much patience as possible, but in the coming weeks, I predict that we will have the opportunity to considerably increase the amount administered each day. “

“Thanks to the tremendous work of our vaccine suppliers, the federal government’s efforts to increase the supply of vaccines to states and the governor’s decision to maintain an age-based system, Connecticut has made tremendous progress in vaccinating our residents quickly. , efficient and equitable, ” Connecticut Acting Public Health Commissioner Dr. Deidre Gifford said. “As we continue to focus on equity in our vaccination program, this more rapid expansion into younger age groups will give vaccinators and local health and community organizations even more flexibility to reach and connect with our communities. high risk to improve access. As we get closer to opening our vaccine program to all individuals over the age of 16, it remains important that everyone continues to wear masks, social distance, avoid large gatherings, practice good hand hygiene and isolate themselves and do the test if you’re sick. ”

Individuals who are currently eligible to receive the vaccine in Connecticut include:

  • All individuals aged 55 and over;
  • Health personnel;
  • Medical first aid;
  • Residents and employees of long-term institutions;
  • Residents and employees of selected congregation settings; and
  • Pre-12 year old school staff and professional child care providers.

Going forward, the vaccine will be launched in Connecticut on the following schedule:

  • March 19th: Scheduling is open to all individuals aged between 45 and 54 years old
  • April 5th (attempt): Scheduling is open to all individuals aged between 16 and 44 years
    • The state will work with providers and the Department of Development Services to accelerate access for individuals at high medical risk under the age of 45 during the month of April.
