Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a further expansion of COVID-19 vaccine eligibility in New York. As of March 10, all New Yorkers 60 years of age or older will be eligible to receive the vaccine, while government officials from government and nonprofit entities will be eligible from March 17. This expansion also includes civil servants for essential construction services.

In addition, the governor announced that with the increase in vaccine supply, restrictions on which segments of the eligible population specific providers can vaccinate will be relaxed to align with the increased eligibility on March 17. Previously, certain types of providers were instructed to focus their vaccination efforts on specific populations to ensure equitable distribution of the vaccine. For example, hospitals vaccinated health workers, local health departments vaccinated essential workers and pharmacies vaccinated New Yorkers aged 65 and over. Now, providers will be able to vaccinate any eligible New Yorkers, with the exception of pharmacies, which will focus on individuals over 60 and teachers, according to federal policy. Pharmacies can start vaccinating individuals over 60 and teachers on March 10. As part of this effort, providers are being encouraged to vaccinate New Yorkers most at risk, such as individuals 60 years of age or older and people with comorbidities and illnesses underlying healthy conditions.

“New York is marching forward, expanding access to the COVID-19 vaccine, addressing underserved communities and receiving vaccines as we turn the tide in the fight against this virus,” he said. Governor Cuomo said. “The offer is constantly increasing and we are opening new vaccination sites and expanding eligibility to match. New Yorkers over 60 and those who serve their fellow New Yorkers in the public sector are most vulnerable to COVID-19 and we are addressing this vulnerability by providing access to the vaccine. The fight against the beast COVID continues on all fronts, and we are reducing the rate of infection while increasing our vaccinations. ”

Under this new expansion of eligibility, the following essential workers will now be eligible to start receiving the COVID-19 vaccine on March 17:

  • Public and government officials
  • Nonprofit workers providing public services to needy New Yorkers
  • Essential service providers for the public in person

This includes workers such as public works officials, social workers and child social workers, government inspectors, sanitation workers, DMV workers, county workers, construction workers and election workers – the day-to-day heroes who have appeared day after day throughout this pandemic.

New York’s vast distribution network and large population of eligible individuals still far exceed the supply from the federal government. Because of this limited supply, New Yorkers are encouraged to remain patient and are advised not to attend vaccination sites without an appointment.
