Abbott made the announcement on Thursday, saying the state will take steps to protect the oil and gas industry, while promising to veto any kind of “new green agreement” legislation, if passed at the same time. proposing legislation to prevent the banning of natural products on gas appliances.
“I’m in Midland to make it clear that Texas will protect the oil and gas industry from any type of hostile attack launched from Washington DC,” said Abbott. “President Biden’s adoption of the new green agreement is a job killer in Texas. It is also a disaster for the energy independence that Texas has been able to provide to the United States of America and Texas will not stand idly by and watch the Biden administration eliminates jobs in Midland, Odessa or anywhere else in the region. “
Abbott then signed an executive order that instructed all state agencies to “use all legal powers and tools to challenge any federal action that threatens the continued strength and vitality of the energy sector. Each state agency must work to identify potential litigation, notices and comments opportunities and any other means of preventing federal reach within the law. “
And when they do, said Abbott, “it will arm Texas to be prepared to fight.”
Abbott said he was also proposing legislation that would prevent local cities and counties from taking action to derail energy from oil and gas, banning natural gas appliances in new buildings. An action he said was recently taken in San Francisco.
“In Texas, we will not allow cities to use the politically correct to dictate which source of energy you use,” said Abbott.
During the roundtable, Abbott spoke with oil and gas workers, energy leaders and advocates about how Texas can continue to support workers after COVID-19 and offered assurance that he intended to protect the energy industry.
“If someone passes a new green agreement policy in Texas, it will be met with the governor’s veto and it will not become law in our state,” said Abbott.
