Government warns of possible variation of US COVID-19

Countries like the UK and South Africa are reporting new mutations in COVID-19, which are currently spreading across the world, having recently landed in the USA

Given the changing nature of viruses, it is possible that the United States may see – or perhaps have seen – its own variation, according to the White House Coronavirus Task Force.

CNN published reports from the federal government on January 3 that warn of the possibility of a “US variant” of the coronavirus.

“This wave of autumn / winter has been almost double the rate of increase in cases compared to spring and summer. This acceleration suggests that there may be a variant of the USA that has evolved here, in addition to the variant of the United Kingdom that is already spreading in our communities and may be 50% more transmissible ”, state the documents.

However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a separate statement on Friday, confirming that there is still no evidence to point to a specific mutation for the U.S.

A CDC spokesman confirmed to reporters that, although the viruses mutate naturally, it may take months for scientists to identify a new COVID-19 strain similar to those seen in other countries.

“Researchers have been monitoring American strains since the start of the pandemic, including 5,700 samples collected in November and December,” wrote the CDC spokesman. “So far, neither CDC researchers nor analysts have seen the emergence of a particular variant in the United States, as seen with the emergence of B.1.1.7 in the United Kingdom or B.1.351 in South Africa.”

White House officials recommended stricter mitigation measures to stop a potentially more transmissible virus. This includes the continued use of facial masks in public and rapid vaccinations.

“Without the uniform implementation of an effective face mask (two or three layers and well-adjusted) and strict social distance, epidemics can quickly worsen as these variants spread and become prevalent,” add the reports.

This news comes as the U.S. records its most lethal day, reporting 4,000 deaths in a single day due to COVID-19.
