The chef, 54, who often runs marathons and long bike rides, admitted that his doctor said he “needs to start slowing down” in a new interview with The Sun.

In addition to revealing his recent operation, Gordon also commented on the impressive culinary skills of his good friend David Beckham, saying that the former footballer is a “true foodie” and declaring that he would win the Great British Bake Off if he appeared on the show.

Gordon told the publication that he needed surgery after getting injured recently while exercising in London.

He said: ‘I just had two weeks on crutches because I had surgery on the meniscus. I did it up the hill in Richmond Park, running up. It was very painful.

‘And when I got the x-rays back, the doctor said,’ You have knee arthritis ‘… I’m a little afraid to stop, but I know that I will have to slow down at some point.’

The chef, who is notoriously active, added that he didn’t want to be lazy in confinement and be angry at the world, so be sure to keep training – calling it your ‘release’ in the midst of a busy work life.

And as if he wasn’t busy enough, Gordon also revealed that he talked about the idea of doing a food-based show with good friend David Beckham.

He said, ‘David is a real foodie. The last thing he prepared for me was a risotto. He learned these skills in Milan and is now a prolific baker and Harper is also an experienced baker.

Praising his friend’s praise, Gordon added that if the former footballer went to the Great British Bake Off, he certainly won the competition before adding that David has ‘incredible attention to detail’.

Gordon remembers one of his weekend trips to Napa, California, saying that David often goes to a chocolate shop and spends hours meticulously decorating cakes.

In another part of his interview, Gordon admitted that he ‘studied’ presenters Bradley Walsh and Jeremy Clarkson while preparing to present his new game show, Bank Balance.

And while he is looking forward to the show’s release, Gordon admitted that last year’s blockages had caused ‘devastation’ to his restaurant business.

Speaking openly about the financial loss, as well as the impact on his team, the TV chef said his revenue fell £ 57.5 million during the pandemic.

He also admitted that he feels great pressure to support his team, especially those who are starting their careers, as everyone needs to earn a living.

Gordon was kept busy during his confinement, spending a lot of time with his children and cycling through houses in London and Cornwall.

Talking about his family, the loving father said he wants to keep them all on the ground and never buys first-class airplanes for his teenagers.

He also revealed that in the past four years two of his children, although he did not reveal which ones, volunteered at Great Ormond Street hospital in London.

Gordon recently revealed that he had to cancel more than 22,000 reservations for his restaurants in December before England plunged into its third blockade.

The star, who owns 35 restaurants across the UK, said Covid’s effect on the hospitality industry was “devastating”, but he remains optimistic that his business could reopen at Easter.

Speaking at The Graham Norton Show, Gordon said he plans to open even more restaurants when the block is eased, after reports that the government’s plan allows pubs and restaurants to reopen in May.

Gordon admitted that thousands of reservations in his business were removed when the Level 3 restrictions in December forced many restaurants to close just weeks after reopening after the second blockade.

Weeks later, the government blocked the entire country, with no set date for the reopening of pubs and restaurants.

He said to Graham: ‘It is devastating. When you think about breaking bread and having fun with friends and family, it’s just tragic not to have it. ‘

The Hell’s Kitchen star added: ‘When we reopened last July, the atmosphere was monumental and electrifying, we didn’t even need music, so being closed was difficult.

‘In December, our most important month, we canceled 22,500 reservations, but I was always optimistic.

‘It is difficult, but we are going to get out of it – we recreate, redevelop and research new ideas, so when we get out of this block, we will open up as new restaurants. We hope to reopen at Easter. It would be a dream. ‘

Gordon also spoke to Graham about his new BBC question and answer program, Bank Balance, revealing that the series was developed during the last blockade.

He said: ‘It was developed through Zoom during the blockade this time last year, with the team spread across the country – I was in Cornwall with my dear neighbors – and we took this high pressure game to an incredible place.

‘The set is really spectacular and intimidating and then you made me ask the questions! It is really exciting. ‘
