GOP loses several thousand in NC after Capitol riots

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) – In the wake of the mortal riots at the US Capitol last week, many people severed their ties to the Republican Party, including former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

In North Carolina, the GOP has lost several thousand people since last Wednesday’s attack.

According to the State Electoral Council, 2,879 people left the Republican Party in North Carolina between January 6 and 11.

More than 2,400 of these people have moved to non-members with 262 moving to the Democratic Party.

Predictably, Wake County had the most voters leaving the Republican Party, with 586 people changing membership.

There were some people who joined the GOP after January 6, with 742 people changing from non-affiliated, constitutional, Democratic or libertarian to Republican.

Therefore, in that six-day period, Republicans had a net loss of 2,137 registered voters in North Carolina.

On the Democratic side, the change in membership of the party is not so dramatic, although the party has suffered a net loss.

Between January 6 and 11, 864 Democrats changed their membership. However, 722 voters have switched from various parties to the Democratic Party, including 440 non-affiliated voters. This is a net loss for 142 voters.
