Google’s ‘Cloud Print’ service will close soon

In short: Another service is joining the Google cemetery, for better or for worse. As the latest in a long series of Google service shutdowns, Cloud Print will be shut down in just a few days, meaning it will no longer be accessible to ChromeOS customers or others.

Most Internet users have probably never used Cloud Print once – it was designed primarily for ChromeOS customers who had limited or no access to traditional printers years ago.

However, now that ChromeOS has a much broader support for printing devices, Cloud Print has become effectively obsolete. It still has some unique benefits, such as the ability to share your printers with friends, but for the most part, there is no reason for Google to keep you around.

In other words, in the worst case, closing Cloud Print will be a minor inconvenience for some. For others, even ChromeOS users, you simply need to remember to change your default printer to a different device – easy enough.

The exact date of the shutdown of Cloud Print is December 31, 2020, that is, two days from now. If you enjoyed using the service for one reason or another, be sure to finish all of your printing tasks before New Year’s Eve.

If you’re not sure how to exit Cloud Print, Google has a comprehensive “migration” guide to help you.
