The latest beta version of the Google app is implementing a new design on the player’s screen in Google Podcasts. Simplification is the focus with more spacing given to the main controls, while other actions are hidden in the process.
Update 2/8: Google app 12.4 beta makes adjustments to the Podcasts screen in redesigned playback. The Sleep timer is back on the bottom line with the previous sliding UI restored. It fits between playback speed and transmission to. The queue is still in its new position on the left edge, while the floating menu remains a sheet for “Share” and “Mark as played”.
Original 1/7: In this new UI, the slider appears immediately below the cover art, title of the scrolling episode and author of the podcast. It is no longer on the penultimate line and is slightly wider than before. This is followed by a play button flanked by half-minute skip / skip and 10-second rewind.
Google Podcasts player redesign
Next to this last element is a button to access the reproduction queue, with the new placement, unfortunately, breaking the symmetry. The biggest change today is in the bottom row of buttons, with the clear intention of spacing the controls so that the buttons are not accidentally touched.
Version 11.42
With the queue moved out of the left corner, playback speed takes its place. “Cast to” is centered just below the game, with an overflow button on the right sliding up a new sheet. “Share” and “Mark as played” appear first, while the “Timer” has been moved here. The user interface for this feature has been adjusted to a simple list, and only standard increments are now provided: 5, 10, 15, 30, 35 minutes, 1 hour or “end of episode”.
This new player design for Google Podcasts is being released with version 11.42 of the Google beta app. It has not yet been implemented on the stable channel on Android, although the iOS app does not yet have an update.
