  • The disassembly of a camera app reveals evidence to suggest that the Google Pixel 6 may have new front-facing camera features.
  • Disassembly shows that the perforated camera can move to the center instead of the normal left alignment.
  • In addition, the camera can support 4K video, something that no Pixel phone has previously supported.

The next Pixel smartphone we hope to see should be the Google Pixel 5a. However, this phone will definitely be a budget-oriented device. And the next flagship of the Pixel?

For now, we’re calling it Google Pixel 6. Today, we’ve gained some new evidence related to this phone thanks to some APK investigations of 9to5Google.

In the latest version of the Pixel line camera app, the code points to some major changes to the front camera on a future Pixel phone. We are assuming that this is Pixel 6, but the code does not use that term. Instead, it uses codenames that may or may not refer to the Pixel’s next flagship. For now, let’s assume that is the case.

Google Pixel 6: What’s on the way?

According to the disassembly of the APK, the selfie camera of a phone that is presumed to be the Pixel 6 is centered, not aligned to the left. This is interesting because all Pixel devices with a perforated camera have so far had a cutout aligned to the left. Meanwhile, Samsung’s main phones have centralized cutouts. Could Google be picking up a page from the Samsung manual here?

Elsewhere, the code suggests that the camera within this centralized crop might be able to record 4K video. At the moment, recent Pixel phones can record 4K video with the rear camera, but not the front. If it turns out well, the Google Pixel 6 would probably be the first Pixel with support for 4K selfie video.

Keep in mind that dismounting APKs can sometimes provide incorrect information. It’s still too early for the Pixel 6 leaks, so don’t take it too seriously. However, it would certainly be interesting to see a Pixel with a centralized selfie camera, and amateur photographers would probably love to shoot 4K videos without turning their phones over. We need to wait and see how it plays out.
