Google Meet breakout rooms can now be set up in Calendar

Last month, Google announced a series of video call features for educational and business customers. Some of them are now being launched, including the ability to set up Google Meet breakout rooms in advance using Calendar.

Support for up to 100 support rooms launched in November to assist with distance learning and other training-like events.

This makes it easier for teachers and meeting facilitators to prepare for differentiated learning, to be careful about group dynamics and to avoid wasting valuable time setting up break rooms during the call.

This simple feature starts with scheduling a Meet call on Google Calendar. A gear icon opens a “Settings for this videoconference” page and the “Rest rooms” menu allows organizers to organize people into groups. In the past, this could only be done at the beginning of calls.

Setting up Meet group session rooms on Google Calendar is starting today and will be fully available next month for the following levels:

Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Nonprofits and Education Plus, as well as G Suite Business customers, teaching and learning upgrade (launched in April)

It will not be accessible for Workspace Business Starter and Education Fundamentals or G Suite Basic.

In the meantime, administrators with Workspace for Education Plus can enable recording of Meet for users with student licenses. This feature will be disabled by default.
