Google Maps Street View gets split-screen user interface on Android

Street View was launched more than a decade ago and this vast database of images is currently using the Live View AR feature. An update to Google Maps for Android improves the Street View experience by adding a split screen mode.

The new split view UI starts automatically when you open Street View after releasing a pin from the map. In the meantime, if you’re accessing Street View directly from a place’s list, it’s the normal full screen interface. In such cases, you will notice a ‘minimize’ button in the lower right corner.

The map below has paths that feature street images highlighted in blue, and photo spheres taken by users are displayed as dots. You can tap anywhere to jump quickly, while the circular marker you are on has an arrow showing the pointed direction. This method of navigation is immensely more convenient than getting around Street View with arrows and dragging.

This Street View split screen is widely implemented (via Reddit) through a server-side update on recent versions of Google Maps. It is appearing on the Android client, but not on iOS. Meanwhile, it has long been available on the web with the ability to adjust the height of each half.
