Selecting a language in Android settings applies this choice to the entire system. Google Maps now allows you to set a language, which may be different from the rest of your phone, for menus, controls and other settings in the app.
To access, touch your profile avatar in the upper right corner and open Settings. “Application language”, with what is currently defined online, now appears as the first menu item. Announced to India last month, this option is now available worldwide:
This will allow anyone to search for places, get directions and navigation and interact with the map in the local language of their choice.
A “Suggested” section indicates common alternative choices, while a list of “All” languages follows. There are 79 in total, with Google asking to confirm the change. This is followed by a restart of the application while the language selection is downloaded quickly in the background.
After a relaunch, everything from the bottom bar to the search and settings changes. The map layer sees the updated captions, but the place names remain mostly unchanged. A small bug causes the hint in the search field to remain the same until another application is restarted.
The new language setting for the Google Maps application is being implemented through a server-side update to recent versions of the application. Users previously could only change the voice used for the navigation settings, although the broader preference has been available online for a long time (drop-down menu> Language).
