Google Maps appears to be testing a new route option UI

With travel today looking more like a necessity than something you do for fun, you’re probably not using Google Maps as much as before. However, it looks like the Google Maps app on Android is testing an UI update for the route option section.

If you open Google Maps and want directions to or from a location, you may be lucky enough to see a new route option UI. The change does not appear to be widely available, but was identified by the team at XDA, with the map view being less obscured by parts of the traditional UI.

You can see in the images below that there are some adjustments to the top entry and destination bar, which now floats above the wider map view. The transportation options also seem to have changed – they are no longer attached to the route option part at the top of the Google Maps window:

Each mode of transport – from bicycle to taxi – is now found in a scrollable list in the bottom half of the display. This can make it easier to reach on larger monitors, but it is a big change that, at least on the first inspection, seems a little complicated. There is also a new “Options” button on the bottom bar that will likely allow you to change route stipulations and toll roads, etc.

This new route option UI has not been widely implemented and is probably only being tested with a few Google Maps users out there. It certainly looks much cleaner, but the current implementation isn’t exactly difficult to use or understand. Let us know in the comments section below what you think of this possible change.
