Google Maps 2020 timeline review shows travel trends

One of the most useful features made possible by enabling Location History on Android is the Google Maps timeline. In addition to a monthly recap, Google Maps is sending out a “2020 timeline update” that has obviously been affected by the past 12 months, but still provides useful local statistics.

COVID-19 changed world travel in 2020 and how many places people were able to visit. If you were able to travel this year, you’ll be able to see some of the places you’ve been to with the help of this automatic timeline email.

Before providing a summary of “Your visits in 2020”, Google first recognizes the current situation. Next, there is a map showing where you traveled with a count of “Cities” and “Places” that indicates how many are new.

The Google Maps 2020 recap, compared to last year, features a “trends” section. It divides the types of places – shopping, food and drink, etc. – visited every month in accumulated hours. It is also possible to see how many kilometers you have walked and driven.

Following are the highlights of “Cities visited” and “Places visited”, with locations receiving a cover image and Google identifying whether they were new.

This recap ends with Google Maps recording the total distance (in miles) you traveled in 2020 and “Your data for all time”.

Although it’s already the new year, Google waits a week or two to send this email. So far, I only received it on one account and it should finish launching in the next few days. The full Maps timeline is available on the web and in mobile apps (profile avatar> Your timeline), but recently made it to Google Photos.
