Google launches new Pixel Buds 553 firmware update

Google updated the Second Generation Assistant’s headphones in September with a correction for audio cuts after a set interval. Firmware 553 is being released for Pixel Buds today, although an update changelog has not yet been provided.

Pixel Buds have received only a dozen updates since their launch last April. A first-day update brought the 195 version firmware to 225. This was followed by 295 in late May – who did not see the patch notes, but 296 in June specifically decreased wheezing and audio static.

In addition to the new functionality, the feature drop in August (550) addressed: stability during calls, automatic recovery after loss of connection, improved media playback stability for phones that have software audio encoding and connection failure of a headset after removing the case.

Based on the Pixel Buds’ firmware update history, 553 is probably a more incremental version focused on fixing bugs instead of offering new features. Soon, Google will list what has changed.

Open the Pixel Buds “app” and navigate to More settings> Firmware update to confirm that an update is waiting. It should be widely released this afternoon. The manual update option we saw in development last week is not yet available.

As such, the process starts by connecting Pixel Buds to your phone. Over about 10 minutes, the new firmware is transferred to the headphones. After placing the buttons in the charging case, it takes another 10 minutes for the update to occur. All components must be sufficiently loaded.
