Yesterday, Chrome was fixed to fix a major vulnerability discovered by researchers, which was actively exploited in nature. Precise details are not known now, but an update was released for Chrome yesterday, and you should install it as soon as you can.

Google is not explaining much about how this vulnerability works “until most users are updated” and the corresponding item in the bug tracker is currently blocked. But security researcher Mattias Buelens reported a heap buffer overflow in the Chrome V8 Javascript engine, which has been fixed in the latest version v88.0.4324.150 for the Stable channel. And this was not just a hypothetical exploration; was being used actively in nature.

According to ZDNet, this could be linked to a vulnerability that security researchers themselves may have been a victim of, which allowed malware to run on their systems.

Whatever the exact cause, Google makes it very clear that this exploit was being actively used on the internet, and you should probably update your computer as soon as possible. To trigger an update manually on most platforms, you can open the three-point menu and go to Help -> About, and the page there allows you to trigger a check or install an update if one has already been downloaded.
