Google closes the Daydream VR Play Store

In October, Google officially abandoned support for its Android 11 virtual reality platform. Daydream is no longer receiving updates and is now unable to access the Google Play Store or other VR discovery features.

Update 2/15: The discovery experience within the Daydream app for Android and RV has been silently restored by Google.

Original 2/8: Over the weekend, Daydream users on Reddit (h / t Mishaal Rahman) noticed an error “Can’t connect to Google right now” when opening the Play Store on the device, while the app’s “Discover” homepage displays a message “Sorry, we encountered a problem”. None of the “Retry” buttons work to properly reload the promotional list of VR apps and other experiences.

That said, you can still install virtual reality apps, like YouTube VR, on your phone’s Google Play Store. They, along with the services that are already on your device, will appear on the Library tab and start. This is in line with Google’s guidance last year that “many of the third-party apps and experiences on Daydream may still be available as standalone apps”.

We do not expect users to lose account information or functionality from third-party applications as a result of Daydream being no longer supported by Google.

This is part of Google’s continued slowdown in its first VR push. The most recent event saw the open source Tilt Brush drawing app last month:

Google’s efforts are now focused exclusively on augmented reality, which is currently based on the phone:
