Google Assistant loses a huge list of books read

There are many useful voice-controlled games and applications in Google Assistant, including several that are useful for parents with young children. In recent years, Google has supported reading with Google Assistant devices, but now most of them are gone, with Disney stories from Little Golden Books removed.

Sighted by Android Police, Google recently updated one of its support pages to note that many of its Little Golden books for reading to Google Assistant are no longer available. The company lists only available books, which include:

  • Aladdin
  • Lion King
  • Frozen
  • Frozen 2

What was removed? 3 times what’s really available. Twelve books have been removed, with one book no longer on Google’s list, but still active. All 17 books are still listed on the Disney website as compatible. The list of titles before February 23 included The Three Little Pigs, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Coco, Jack Jack Attack, Moana, Toy Story 3, Peter Pan, Mulan, Mickey Mouse and his spaceship, Christmas Tale of Mickey, Mickey Mouse Go Christmas Shopping and Ara, the stellar engineer. The latter is still available when requested on Google Assistant speakers and smart displays.

Previously, you could access all 17 books through the Wizard using commands like “Hey Google, let’s read together with Disney”. So, you can choose a book and start reading, but now most of those books are gone.

At this point, it is not clear why these titles were removed. Google, Disney and Little Golden have scrambled this library in the past, but this time, majority the titles have been removed entirely. It may be just a case of a licensing problem, but we will have to wait and see.
