Golden Globes Fall sharply in Views: Report

Golden Globe saw another drop in audience.

According to Variety, only 5.4 million people tuned in to Sunday’s broadcast, hosted by former Saturday Night Live students Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

The broadcast obtained a measly 1.2 rating among adults aged 18 to 49, reports the channel, according to the first Neilsen figures not adjusted for time zone differences.

The figures do not include views of the Pacific time zone. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it also doesn’t include out-of-home viewing data. Both statistics will be included in the final numbers on Tuesday, which will slightly increase the total, but will not come close to the numbers of recent years, reports THR.

Final Nielsen live data on the same day eventually increased those numbers to 18.3 million viewers and a demo rating of 4.7.

In 2019, 18.6 million people tuned in, giving the broadcast a 5.2 demonstration rating, which was actually higher than the 2018 rating of 5.0 (with an audience of 19 million).

The drastic decline is not encouraging for NBC, as the broadcaster reportedly spends $ 60 million a year to broadcast the ceremony.

During the opening monologue, Fey and Poehler wasted no time making fun of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which does the show.

In the week leading up to the 78th annual awards came the revelation that there are no black voting members in the group, something that only reinforced the criticism of the press association – which the notoriously controversial presenter Ricky Gervais last year called “very, very racist” in your opening monologue – needs a review.

The comedy duo’s opening monologue was also significant because they made no mention of politics, despite the show being known for its political coups. Co-hosts failed to mention the months after the 2020 presidential election and tackled the growing allegations of sexual harassment by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Although Poehler and Fey’s lack of politics may not be a surprise, as Fey warned viewers before the show not to expect politics.

The first glimpses of the awards showed stars from this year’s nominated programs and films appearing on Zoom. And to no surprise, this year’s ceremony presented some technical difficulties.

The Globes have also been hugely successful for streaming services – particularly with Netflix, which has taken home 10 awards in film and television categories.
