Golden Globe 2021: the winners, the speeches, the controversy – live | Movie

This year, and try not to get too upset about it, gift suites have been forced to leave expensive hotel suites and go out into the street instead of expensive hotels.

The strange thing, here is some soap and a luxury cruise vacation, a ritual in which rich stars receive things they might otherwise have paid for, has become even stranger this year. Buuuuut to make the practice a little less rough this year, the first 10 respondents also received some gifts. This year a $ 149 active Bluetooth mask (?) Is included, as well as, for some, a trip to Bali.

Often demoted as the bottom half of the night, it’s easy to forget that Globes are also a celebration of the small screen, something that has become a standard joke at this stage (Fey and Poehler will almost certainly refer to that at some point).

But this year, more than ever, we watch a ton of shows more than movies, so maybe that is about to change? Here’s Adrian Horton bravely guessing who and what might come out on top:

Greetings from the fashion team! Hannah Marriott and Priya Elan here, blowing the dust from our critical faculties, as we haven’t had a red carpet for a while. Let’s start with the presenter Margot Robbie, in Chanel with sashes and belt – look 3 from the spring / summer 21 catwalk, I think. She is great. Personally, I am happy to have an outfit to look at that is not my own sweatpants.

In recent years, there have been divisive discussions about the need for an award presenter. Recent examples – Ricky Gervais, James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel – did not exactly inspire us to want anything more than a robot announcing the winners, but in trying to remember the last great example, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler stand out from the rest.

The duo has hosted three times before, managing to be sharp without being too bad, skillfully spying on both the industry and the Globes themselves, and as surprising as it is tonight, they should provide us with some worthwhile moments.

Here’s a reminder of your best:

Talks about the city over the past week or more were the consequences of the LA Times’ damaging investigation into the composition and practices of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The group of 87 international journalists has long been ridiculed by the industry for being a small and questionable but strangely influential cabal, plagued by bribery rumors and accused of opting for star power instead of recognizing genuine talent. At this stage, anyone who turns on the Globe and expects a fair and balanced review of last year is high on something, but these recent revelations have revealed more alleged corruption and problems than any of us knew.

Here are some of the main findings:

  • Of the 87 members, none are black
  • HFPA is a non-profit organization, but in the last fiscal year, members reportedly raised nearly $ 2 million in group payments, something that could lead to problems with the IRS
  • More than 30 members were taken to Paris to promote the Emily in Paris show and had a luxury stay (the show ended with two nominations)
  • Many of the members write for obscure vehicles and advertisers are supposed to be forced to work with them for fear of being punished by the HFPA in general
  • Members include a wealthy socialite and a bodybuilder who has become an actor
  • Members were also punished for selling gifts sent by advertisers, as well as tickets to the ceremony itself

Going for gold

Coming almost two months later than usual, this year’s Golden Globes ceremony is about to start a strange season of awards with controversy, confusion and a renewing amount of unpredictability.

It tends to be the loosest, most drunk and foolish award show of the year, with hosts and presenters taking it as seriously as we should. Tonight will be even stranger than usual: the hosts, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey (praise be), and the presenters will be personally on the east and west coasts, while all the nominees will be at home. It kind of worked for the Emmy last year, even with a less secure emcee and almost a year of pandemic, things should be technically well managed tonight, everyone much more confident with the complexities of virtual life.

Expected winners include Carey Mulligan, the late Chadwick Boseman and at least one person from The Crown, but success will come with a shadow. For years, many of us know that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a strange group of 87 tenuously labeled journalists, has been a joke, handing out awards to unworthy winners, more impressed with celebrity than talent, but a recent Los Angeles The exposure of time showed us an even darker side (more on that later).

It will be interesting to see how Fey and Poehler deal with it tonight, if they will, but the greater scrutiny will add an advantage tonight for sure. Stay with us on what goes on like a red carpet in 2021, all the many winners, speeches easily cut at home and any other controversy that arises. It will be unique.
