WWE booked this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw around a group of returning legends, of course, but they ended up playing supporting roles with a focus on the main event: Drew McIntyre against Keith Lee for the WWE championship.
Hulk Hogan put McIntyre on high while Lee was left to be promoted by, uh, Matt Riddle. Despite this last point, the match was treated as a legitimate big showcase and Lee presented himself as a worthy challenger. They had about half an hour, and all the Legends sat at the top of the stage to watch.
What they received was a physical battle of friction back and forth. There was never any doubt that McIntyre would retain the title, which is exactly what he did after an off-clay Claymore, but Lee did a great job there in a big fight.
And then Goldberg came back.
He claimed that McIntyre doesn’t have enough respect for the legends that have returned and he wants to challenge him to a WWE championship fight at the Royal Rumble on January 31. McIntyre said it would be like fighting his own father, Goldberg pushed him down, and the show went down.
It completely overshadowed what I thought was Lee’s strong acting, but hey, this is WWE. We know the business now.
