Godzilla vs. Kong Writer discusses the possibility of sequences and derivatives

The screenwriter of Godzilla vs. Kong tells fans what the future of MonsterVerse might be, or if there are any plans for sequels.

The screenwriter for Godzilla vs. Kong shared details about whether there are plans for a sequel or spin-off films for MonsterVerse. Max Borenstein was one of the main architects of the Legendary Pictures MonsterVerse franchise, having written the scripts for Godzilla and was one of the co-writers of Kong: Skull Island, in addition to contributing to the history of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He is a co-writer of the recent release Godzilla vs. Kong alongside Eric Pearson.

Godzilla vs. Kong is the movie that fans have been waiting for since the project was announced in 2015, right after the release of Godzilla. Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters he started laying the groundwork for the big title fight between the two titans, using the post-credit scenes to connect the two franchises. In a recent interview with Max Borenstein with Collider, reporter Steven Weintraub asked Borenstein if there were any plans after Godzilla vs. Kong under development or if this was the peak of the franchise. Borenstein says the main objective of bringing Godzilla and Kong together in one film was focus, but he does not rule out the possibility of more films in the franchise. He does not indicate whether he is attached to any other projects within the universe, but he is excited about what may happen. Borenstein said:

“I hope there is, I have no idea. If it is not the peak, then the plateau that everyone has been aiming for. This is a point that has been part of the ambition since the beginning, so I look forward to whatever the next iteration of this franchise is. It certainly made these two characters, like The Avengers, you build in that place. That does not mean that there are no future films that bring everyone together. “

Godzilla x Kong Kong under construction

Director Adam Wingard recently confirmed that they cut a post-credit scene from Godzilla vs. Kong this would have created the next MonsterVerse movie. Part of this may be due to the uncertainty of the MonsterVerse franchise, given the poor box office results of Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. This film was the lowest grossing film in the franchise and, given that the Legendary and Toho deal was set to expire in 2020, it may be that the studio at the time decided that Godzilla vs. Kong, the film for which they were building, could serve as a possible end point for the franchise.

Godzilla vs. Kong it seems to have given a new life to the franchise. It went well in theaters and won the best critical score on RottenTomatoes of any film in the franchise. It is still possible for Legendary Pictures to continue MonsterVerse with Kong, Godzilla or another Titan, whether it’s a fan favorite or an entirely new one. Legendary Pictures is also the studio behind the circle of fire franchise. Guillermo del Toro and Steven S. DeKnight expressed interest in having MonsterVerse and circle of fire the franchises intersect, so there are still many monster stories to tell.
