While the storyline for the latest installment of the action-adventure game currently under development by Santa Monica Studio remains unknown, fans can expect previous protagonists Kratos and his son Atreus to play a prominent role. With combat elements, puzzles and platforms, the original God of War (2005) the game was tied as the highest-rated game in the franchise with the immediate predecessor of the next installment, God of War (2018) with both getting several perfect scores from critics.

Positioning itself in the ranking of Insomniac and Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio is widely considered to be one of Sony’s best developers. Some critics consider choosing to launch the game on PS4 a potential error, arguing that the current shortage of PS5 exclusive games may discourage users from upgrading their consoles. Currently, it appears that Sony is not counting exclusively on encouraging sales, with the latest generation having recently broken record sales in dollars and units of all time, becoming the best-selling game console in the history of the United States.

Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, God of War: Ragnarok will be released in 2021 for the PlayStation 5.
