Gmail web now allows you to resize the Google Chat sidebar

One way to drive adoption of Google Chat is to make it available directly from the email tab that users have probably already opened. The Gmail web client now allows you to resize the side widgets for Google chat and rooms.

You can now resize the Chat and Rooms sections in the left hand navigation of Gmail on the web. This makes it easier to stay on top of your most important conversations and navigate to relevant chats more quickly.

This feature is for users who keep the Gmail navigation drawer expanded. It is based on the general ability to show / hide entire sections by tapping the caret symbol next to Chat, Rooms or Meet. The classic Hangouts widget has long had a similar resize feature.

To resize, select the top of the desired list / section until a light gray bar appears and the cursor changes shape. This helps to customize and better control the already occupied interface. It works well with the existing ability to pin conversations so that you see only those that are of particular interest.

The ability to resize Google chat and rooms in Gmail will be fully implemented for the following Workspace customers in the coming days:

Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, as well as customers of G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education and non-profit organizations
