Gmail search results will now include email address aliases

The Gmail search bar is already a powerful tool, especially when using advanced filters, and will now show the associated email aliases in the results.

When you search for an email address in Gmail, we will now show all emails associated with that specific address and all the aliases of which it is a part.

An e-mail alias is simply an “alternate address for receiving mail”, generally used for: changes in official names, preferred names and as a result of rebooking of companies, acquisitions or subsidiaries.

The results are extracted from the lines for, de, cc and bcc, as well as appearing anywhere in the message body. Google explains that this feature will ensure that users do not have to maintain a continuous list of email changes. Labels are not affected.

With this change, the search will be easier and the results more comprehensive, as users will not need to remember all of someone’s aliases and perform multiple searches for each one.

That said, users will still be able to search for exact accounts using quotes around the address in question. Email aliases in Gmail search are implemented in the following workspace layers:

Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, as well as customers of G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education and non-profit organizations
