Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert makes no commitment to bring quarterback Ben Roethlisberger back to Pittsburgh for the 2021 season.
Steelers had previously made it clear that Roethlisberger will not be back without a restructured contract. Roethlisberger said he is willing to redo his business, but that may not be enough for the Steelers.
“While we’re sitting here today, Ben is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Colbert, via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “He reiterated that he wants to continue playing. We told him that we have to look in this current situation. “
Colbert did not close the door on Roethlisberger’s return, but hinted that Roethlisberger would have to accept an exorbitant wage cut.
“Ben Roethlisberger did a lot of good things last year. We anticipate that he will still be able to do really good things going forward. I hope we can find out how to do what is best for the organization and for Ben. I hope he will be able to see that, ”said Colbert.
Under his current contract, Roethlisberger has a massive $ 41.25 million limit for the 2021 season, and the Steelers are about $ 30 million over the limit. The decision will certainly come before March 19, when, if he is still on the team under his current contract, Steelers would have to pay Roethlisberger a $ 15 million bonus.
