DETROIT – General Motors confirmed plans on Tuesday to produce a Chevrolet Silverado all-electric pickup truck at a new EV assembly plant that is under construction in Detroit.

The truck is part of a $ 2.2 billion investment previously announced at the plant to produce a series of its next-generation EVs starting later this year with a fully electric GMC Hummer pickup. Other vehicles planned for the installation include the newly unveiled Hummer EV SUV and an autonomous multi-passenger space shuttle known as Cruise Origin.

The plant, which GM renamed Factory Zero last year, in honor of the zero-emission EVs that will be produced there, is central to the automaker’s plans for electric vehicles. It is the first of four North American facilities that GM has said will transition production from vehicles with internal combustion engines to EVs. It will be a proving ground and a proving point for the company’s promise that it can produce profitable electric vehicles.

“Vehicles coming from Factory Zero will change the world and how the world sees electric vehicles,” said GM President Mark Reuss in a statement. “The GMC Hummer EV SUV joins its stable mate in the realm of true supertrucks, and Chevrolet will take everything that loyal Chevy truck buyers love at Silverado – and more – and place it in an electric pickup truck that will delight customers of retail and commercial. “

GM declined to supply when the Chevrolet pickup will go into production at Factory Zero, a 4.5 million square foot factory outside Detroit and on the border with the city of Hamtramck. The Hummer EV pickup is expected to go on sale this fall, followed by the Hummer EV SUV in early 2023.

The new Chevy Silverado EV will have a range of more than 400 miles at full load, according to GM.

The vehicles announced are part of GM’s plan to launch 30 new EVs globally by 2025, with an investment of $ 27 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles during that period. Until then, the company plans to sell at least 1 million EVs annually – on its way to the transition to being a fully electric automaker in 2035.
